Finally, we have a video slot game that is set in our South African backyard! Our protagonist Kane, while on an expedition in Lesotho, learns of an ancient temple located somewhere in KwaZulu-Natal. This is a temple like no other as animals seemingly come here to sacrifice gold to their gods. Join Kane as he tries to uncover the mysteries that surround this structure.
ELK Studios is a developer that likes to do some research before creating their titles, each game has a page on their website outlining stats for the game in question. At the bottom of each page is a fun fact and the fun fact that they shared with this title is all about Unkulunkulu, one of the most powerful gods in traditional Zulu religion. It might be a safe bet to assume that this is the god the animals are sacrificing their gold to.
Join us as we become a member of Kane’s crew that has set out to learn all there is to learn about this temple. Luckily we won’t have to travel too far as it’s local! We’ll document all of our findings and let you know what bonus features to look out for.
Theme & Symbols
A vague image should already be forming as to what this video slot game looks and feels like. Being a game a lot of the elements that have been used for inspiration have been exaggerated somewhat. You can still clearly see the South African and Zulu factors all throughout this game.
The game starts up with us already inside the mysterious temple, we’ve either been here for a little bit or someone, maybe even something, is maintaining the temple as the fireplaces have already been lit. There is a constant animation on the fire which makes the game feel more immersive. Classic shields with crossed spears decorate the two pillars to the left and to the right of the reels. When the symbols fall away you can catch a glimpse of the gold that is hiding in the back, it looks like the stories were true!
The music is exactly what you would expect from a title with this theme, it fits and it feels right. The sound effects are strong and effective, letting you know when things are happening that need your attention.
The artwork on the lower paying symbols could’ve been a little better, they were trying to emulate rock paintings which is why it’s fairly simplistic but it still would’ve been nice to see more. With that said however, the rest of the icons in the game are superb. A lot of time and effort went into making the symbols look as real and authentic as possible.
Overall, ELK Studios has done a great job bringing this locally set video slot game to life. There’s always an unprecedented feeling of joy when a game or title uses South Africa as its location. If you’re South African then we highly recommend you check out this title just because it’s locally set.
Starting off we have the low-paying icons. These are represented by four different cave paintings and four different coloured symbols. The paintings illustrate a Crocodile, a Buck, a Snake and a Zebra. The different coloured symbols are Green, Blue, Purple and Red.
Next up are the high-paying icons. These are represented by the animals that have sacrificed their gold and by Kane. The animals that will lead you to the gold are Wildebeest, the Rhino and the Elephant.
A black and brass lion head represents this game’s Wild Walker. When it lands it will spin and land on one of eight directions, replacing whatever symbol it lands on with a Wild. Wilds can substitute for any other icon in the game helping you build winning combos easier.
The Rising Sun “Bonus” symbol is this game’s Scatter. Land enough of these during a single drop and you’ll activate a bonus gameplay feature.
Online Betting Options & Features
Zulu Gold starts off as a 6 – reel, 3 – row cascading video slot game but as the game progresses more rows can be added. Wins are paid out according to matching symbols in each joining row and the RTP for this game sits at around 95%.
Like most cascading video slot games, this one has an avalanche feature. When drops that result in a win occur, the winning symbols explode and allow new ones to fill their place. When this happens a new row is added to the grid for that drop.
Symbols can appear stacked on the reels, possibly even increasing the rows that are available.
Multipliers have a chance to appear and display on the shields next to the grid. They will multiply any win by the number displayed.
Charged Wilds are Wilds that only disappear when they are used to create a win. Even then they might only use up one of their ‘lives’ where most charged Wilds have multiple ‘lives’.
Super symbols can appear at any time during the game. These symbols have different tiers: Super (2×2), Mega (3×3) and Epic (4×4). If these symbols land after other symbols have, they will break them as the bigger symbol falls to the bottom of the grid.
By landing at least 3 Scatters you will be awarded with 10 bonus drops. Landing more will give you more drops, 4 Scatters will get you 15 drops, 5 will get you 20 and if you’re able to land 6 Scatters you will get yourself 25 bonus drops. A progressive multiplier is active during the bonus drops where any other multiplier that lands gets added to the progressive one.
