Online Casinos For Players In Mpumalanga
Updated Oct 29, 2026
Online casino gambling isn’t licensed in South Africa, and the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator doesn’t change that. Players in the province can still reach offshore casinos at their own risk. Below: the law, the regulator, and sites that take local players.
Mpumalanga, “the place where the sun rises” in Zulu, is home to the southern half of the Kruger National Park, Lisbon Falls, Pilgrim’s Rest, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and many other natural attractions. Mining is a big part of the economy: the province accounts for 83% of the country’s coal production.
There are several land-based casinos in the province, including Emnotweni Casino, Goldrush and The Ridge Casino.
South Africa’s Stance on Gambling
When the National Gambling Act of 1996 was introduced, it tried to make gambling houses fairer and more accessible. Every province then set up its own gambling board to regulate gambling locally. These boards can implement their own rules and alter the Act for their province somewhat, though that isn’t common.
The National Gambling Act was amended in 2004 to prohibit owning, operating or taking part in online gambling systems. Online sports betting is fine, but other online gambling isn’t. That is why many offshore websites target South African players: they can’t be run locally. Enforcement is lax, but it could tighten at any time, so keep that in mind.
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (the M.E.R.) is the institution entrusted with the functions assigned to it by the acts of the local government. Its vision is to be at the forefront of effective regulation of the gambling and liquor industries. It enforces its regulations and helps stimulate the economy with funds from licensed gambling houses.
It is a fairly active regulator, running events and campaigns to raise awareness. It encourages people to report illegal gambling dens and liquor traders, and promotes gambling safety in the community.
You can call the regulator on +27 13 750 8000 or visit First Avenue, White River, Mpumalanga.
Online Casinos for Players in Mpumalanga
Online gambling is restricted in the province and in the country, but there are no physical blocks on most of the websites players use. You can log in and play at online casinos, but you do so at your own risk.
Regulations haven’t caught up with technology. Attempts to amend the Act have been made, but none has succeeded.

What to Check Before You Play
Not all casinos support the South African rand, so check that yours does. Not all games are available to South Africans because of licensing restrictions, so check that the casino can offer the games you want. And understand that online casino play is at your own risk.
