Types of Casino Bonuses

South African online casinos offer many kinds of bonus, from no deposit offers to cashback and loyalty rewards. This page explains each type in plain terms and links to our dedicated guide for it. Every bonus has terms attached, so read them before you claim.

A casino bonus is a way of giving players free money or free gambling options. For most operators, bonuses are a big part of their marketing, helping them turn visitors into customers and keep existing ones. For players, a bonus can stretch your bankroll or let you try a casino with less of your own money.

Bonuses are not free money in the everyday sense. They come with conditions, and you can still lose. If you are new to bonuses, start by getting to know the basic types below. We do not quote specific offers on this page because they change often. Our dedicated pages list what is currently available.

Before you claim anything, it helps to know three things: bonus terminology, the terms and conditions explained, and how to work out the wagering you will face with our wagering requirements calculator guide.

No Deposit Bonus

A no deposit bonus is exactly what it says: you do not have to make a deposit to receive it. It comes as free money or free spins, most often for new customers, and usually needs a no deposit bonus code when you claim.

Winnings from no deposit bonuses can usually be cashed out once you complete the wagering requirements. They normally have a maximum withdrawal limit, and playthrough requirements differ a lot between casinos. That is why reading the terms attached to the bonus is essential.

Free Spins Bonus

A free spins bonus is awarded for playing online slots. You get a set number of rounds, each with a preset value. Free spins can come as a no deposit bonus or as a reward for depositing. Typically they can be played on selected games only, for instance from one software provider.

Free spins are often part of a welcome package. Many slot fans like them, especially when the wagering requirements are reasonable.

Sign Up Bonus

Most gambling sites offer a sign-up bonus. New customers are usually treated to a welcome package, often a deposit match bonus together with free spins. Some sign-up offers cover several deposits, not only the first. Many casinos also have special welcome bonuses for high rollers.

Reload Bonus

A reload bonus is a deposit match at its core. Its job is to bring back existing players. It can be offered weekly or monthly, or tied to a specific event, but the purpose is the same: another reason to play a slot or try blackjack or another table game.

Cashback Bonus

Also called insurance, a cashback bonus lets players recover a part of their losses at the casino. The percentage varies between casinos. Deposits that were matched with bonuses normally do not take part, and the promotion can be daily, weekly or monthly. Like other bonuses, cashback is usually subject to wagering requirements.

Loyalty Bonus

Loyalty bonuses are based on your previous activity at the casino. Many sites run loyalty schemes with exclusive offers and privileges for members, while others reward players individually. They can range from free spins with low or no wagering requirements to birthday gifts and tailor-made deals.

High Roller Bonus

High rollers are rarely interested in standard deals. They look for bigger bonus amounts and lower wagering requirements. High roller bonuses are aimed at players who are ready to make a large deposit.

Non-Sticky Bonus

Deposit match bonuses can be divided into sticky and non-sticky. The main difference is that a non-sticky bonus is cashable, while a sticky bonus stays with the casino and cannot be turned into real money.

With a non-sticky offer, your deposit is not “glued” to the bonus funds. You play with your own money first, and if you win, you can withdraw the winnings provided you have not touched the bonus. Once your deposit runs out and you start using the bonus balance, any winnings are subject to wagering requirements.

Exclusive Bonus

An exclusive bonus is set up for players who visit from a particular affiliate website. For example, an exclusive no deposit or sign-up bonus might be available only to SlotsZAR visitors. Look out for a special coupon or bonus code to use when claiming.

Check the Terms First

South African players are spoilt for choice when it comes to bonuses and promotions, so it is vital to check the terms and conditions before you claim. Reading and understanding the fine print is the only way to know what a bonus really asks of you.

Look at the wagering requirement, the maximum withdrawal, the games that count and any expiry date. If you cannot find the terms, or they are unclear, that is a reason to skip the offer. Set a budget before you play and never chase losses.
