Blueprint Gaming are wasting no time converting their extensive catalogue of land casino games for the online market. Winstar is their twentieth release, in a little over a year, and has proven popular on the casino floor. However, it may prove to be a little simplistic for the discerning online player.

Winstar Presentation

Winstar is bright and colourful and has obviously taken a few design cues from games such as Starburst and Bejeweled. Those slots are much-admired by gamers though, so it will have a tough time emulating their popularity.

Winstar Features

There are no bonus features to discuss, but Winstar does have a few notable quirks that are worth mentioning. Both high and low paying symbols are stacked across all reels. Because of this, it is possible to win on a large number of the ten pay lines simultaneously. All wins pay adjacent, which means you are rewarded for combinations arranged left-to-right and right-to-left. You are also rewarderd for any three matching symbols on reels two, three and four. This is an unusual payout scheme that takes some getting used to. You may find yourself receiving a win for what you thought was a dead spin because of this. The gold star is a “mystery symbol”, and will begin to rotate at the end of each spin before settling to reveal a matching random symbol. If you have a lot of these on the reels it can pay off in a big way. But it can be very frustrating if the symbol chosen isn’t the one you needed.

Payouts

The regular jackpot in Winstar is a little low at 500x your stake, but this is offset somewhat by the higher than average payouts for smaller combinations. Nevertheless, with no wilds or scatters on the reels it can be difficult to achieve a win sometimes, so be prepared to see a lot of dead spins when playing this game. There is also a progressive jackpot to play for, although it’s currently somewhat smaller than that offered by other Blueprint slots at a little over R150,000.

Summary

This is a fun game, but the lack of features means you’ll have seen everything this game has to offer within just a few spins. On the other hand, the lack of features does result in medium sized wins occurring much more often. This probably won’t be a game you want to play for long, but it is worth a few spins every now and again.
